In the Deanwood neighborhood of Washington, D.C., on the evening of October 6, 2020, 30-year-old Michael Bright was shot and killed. The incident occurred at approximately 9:08 p.m. in the 1100 block of 45th Street, NE, where responding officers found Bright suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency services transported him to a local hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the male's death led to the arrests of multiple suspects in what police believe was an
attempted robbery. On October 29, 2020, authorities apprehended 28-year-old Delonte Samuel of Northeast, DC. The following day, 23-year-old James Flemings of Bladensburg, Maryland, was also taken into custody. Both men were charged with first-degree murder while armed.
Further developments in the case came on January 11, 2021, with the arrest of a third individual, 21-year-old Exavior Pinnix from Accokeek, Maryland, who faced the same charge of first-degree murder while armed. However, during a preliminary hearing on March 16, 2021, a judge found probable cause to proceed with the case against Delonte Samuel but dismissed the case against Exavior Pinnix. In June 2022, Delonte Samuel, who was 29 at the time of sentencing, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder while armed and was sentenced to 16 years in prison. Michael Bright was a father of four.
