In the early hours of Tuesday, December 1, 2020, the northbound lanes of I-295 near East Capitol Street in Northeast Washington, D.C., became a crime scene. At approximately 3:11 a.m., Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to a report of a person in the roadway. Upon arrival, they discovered the body of 20-year-old Timothy Logan, a Black male from Washington, D.C., who was suffering from gunshot wounds.
Despite the efforts of DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services, Logan was pronounced dead at the scene.
The initial investigation was complex, with detectives from both the Homicide Branch and the Major Crash unit dispatched to determine the sequence of events. It was soon confirmed that Logan's death was a homicide. The case gained momentum when investigators released surveillance footage to the public. The video showed a male suspect, described as being approximately 5'10' tall and wearing dark, hooded clothing, fleeing the area.
This release of information proved crucial. A tip from a community member who recognized the individual in the footage led police to identify a suspect. On December 5, 2020, just four days after the fatal shooting, police arrested 22-year-old Marcus Thompson. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder while armed. Investigators believe the shooting was the tragic escalation of a prior disagreement between Thompson and Logan.
