On a Tuesday afternoon, February 23, 2021, 49-year-old Marcus Covington was on the platform of the Anacostia Metro Station in Southeast Washington, D.C. At approximately 1:35 p.m., he was approached by a man who descended the escalator to the platform. The two exchanged a brief conversation and what appeared to be a half-hearted hug. The encounter took a tragic turn when, as Covington turned to walk back to the bench, the other man pulled out a handgun and shot him multiple times at close
range.
The assailant, later identified as Kirk Spencer, then 26 years old, fled the station immediately after the shooting. Emergency services responded to the scene and transported Covington to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Marcus Covington succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead the following day, Wednesday, February 24, 2021. The entire incident was captured on the Metro station's video surveillance, which provided crucial evidence for investigators.
The Metropolitan Police Department launched an investigation, and with the help of the surveillance footage, they were able to identify Kirk Spencer as the suspect. On Friday, March 19, 2021, members of the Capitol Area Regional Fugitive Task Force located and arrested Spencer. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder while armed. In October 2024, Kirk Spencer pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree murder while armed. In April 2025, a Superior Court Judge sentenced Spencer to 18 years in prison, to be followed by five years of supervised release.
