On a Tuesday afternoon, February 23, 2021, 49-year-old Marcus Covington was on the platform of the Anacostia Metro Station in Southeast Washington, D.C. At approximately 1:35 p.m., he was approached by a man who descended the escalator to the platform. The two exchanged a brief conversation and what appeared to be a half-hearted hug. The encounter took a tragic turn when, as Covington turned to walk back to the bench, the other man pulled out a handgun and shot him multiple times at close range.
