On what was supposed to be a day of introduction, a Washington, D.C. family was shattered by a brutal act of violence that left a young mother and her own mother dead. Ebony Wright, a 32-year-old woman, was fatally shot on April 12, 2021, in her apartment in the 2300 block of Good Hope Court, SE. The tragic event unfolded when Keanan Turner, the 34-year-old father of Ebony's infant son, came to her home, ostensibly to meet his child for the very first time.
The meeting, which also
included Ebony's mother, Wanda Wright, 48, and Ebony's sister, took a horrific turn after about an hour. Turner, who had previously urged Ebony to terminate the pregnancy and had been served with child support papers a month earlier, pulled out a gun and opened fire. He shot Ebony in the head and then turned the weapon on her mother, Wanda, shooting her in the back of the head. He also shot Ebony's sister in the face, though she miraculously survived the attack.
In a final, heinous act, Turner set fire to the child support paperwork in an attempt to harm the infant boy before fleeing the apartment. As he left, he attempted to dismantle a Ring camera on the front door, inadvertently exposing a distinctive tattoo on his arm. Despite her grave injuries, Ebony's sister was able to rescue her nephew from the fire and call 911. Her testimony would later be crucial in bringing Turner to justice.
Keanan Turner was arrested on April 16, 2021, and subsequently charged with a litany of offenses, including two counts of first-degree murder. Prosecutors argued that Turner's motive was to evade his financial responsibilities as a father and to conceal the existence of his child from his wife. A D.C. Superior Court jury found Turner guilty on all charges, and he was sentenced to nearly 70 years in prison for the murders of Ebony and Wanda Wright and the violent assault on her sister.
