In the early moments of a Wednesday morning in Washington, D.C., a fatal encounter unfolded inside a convenience store that would end the life of 27-year-old Malcolm Johnson. On July 21, 2021, Johnson was in a store in the 2200 block of Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue, Southeast, when he was approached by Rondez Tibbs. The situation quickly escalated into an attempted robbery, with both men armed with firearms.
A struggle ensued between the two men.
During the confrontation, gunfire was exchanged, and both Johnson and Tibbs were struck. Following the shooting, Johnson managed to leave the convenience store and get into a vehicle. He was later found unresponsive inside the car in the 2400 block of Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue, Southeast. Emergency services responded to the scene, but Johnson showed no signs of life.
Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch investigated the incident and identified 26-year-old Rondez Tibbs as the suspect. He was arrested on the same day as the shooting and was subsequently charged with felony murder. Tibbs was hospitalized after the shooting. In June 2022, Rondez Tibbs pleaded guilty to second-degree murder while armed. He was later sentenced to an 11-year prison term for his role in the death of Malcolm Johnson.
