In the early morning hours of August 23, 2021, the sounds of gunfire shattered the quiet of the Shaw neighborhood in Northwest Washington, D.C. When police arrived at the 1800 block of Ninth Street NW around 2:24 a.m., they discovered 32-year-old Ali Jamil Al-Mahdi suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency medical services rushed him to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead a short time later.
The cause of his death was determined to be the gunshot wounds he sustained.
The investigation into the death of Al-Mahdi, a male resident of Southeast D.C., quickly focused on a suspect. In January 2023, the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force apprehended 27-year-old Deonte Patterson of Suitland, Maryland, in connection with the murder. Patterson was subsequently charged with second-degree murder while armed. Evidence presented during legal proceedings revealed a history between the two men; Al-Mahdi had previously shot Patterson in a 2019 incident, for which Al-Mahdi had been convicted and imprisoned.
The night of the fatal shooting, both Al-Mahdi and Patterson were at a nightclub in the area. According to testimony from Patterson's on-and-off girlfriend, who was with him that night, Al-Mahdi followed them as they left the club and walked towards Patterson's car. Moments after she got into the vehicle, she heard gunshots but did not see who fired the weapon. Shortly after the shooting, Patterson was involved in a car crash nearby, during which he and a firearm were ejected from the vehicle. DNA evidence later linked that firearm to Patterson and to the cartridge casings found at the scene of Al-Mahdi's shooting.
In March 2025, a jury found Deonte Patterson guilty of first-degree premeditated murder while armed, possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, and obstructing justice. The obstruction charge stemmed from phone calls Patterson made from jail, instructing his girlfriend not to cooperate with investigators. Patterson's sentencing was scheduled for May 30, 2025, facing a maximum sentence of life in prison.
