In the autumn of 2021, a tragedy unfolded in a Southeast Washington, D.C. apartment that cut short the life of 32-year-old Cynthia Barringer. On the afternoon of October 31st, the smell of smoke prompted a response from DC Fire and EMS to a residential building in the 2300 block of Green Street, SE. Inside one of the apartments, firefighters discovered a fire and, upon extinguishing it, found Ms. Barringer. Initially, it appeared she had succumbed to thermal injuries, but the subsequent investigation would reveal a more sinister cause of death.
An autopsy conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner on November 1, 2021, determined that Cynthia Barringer had not died in the fire but had been fatally shot. Her death was officially ruled a homicide. The investigation into her death, described by authorities as domestic in nature, soon pointed to a suspect.
On December 27, 2021, members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested 30-year-old Karon Brown of Northeast, D.C., charging him with second-degree murder while armed.
The investigation revealed that an argument between Brown and Ms. Barringer preceded her death. During the dispute, Brown shot her in the head with a. 40 caliber semi-automatic pistol. In an attempt to conceal the crime, he then set a fire in the bedroom where the shooting occurred before fleeing. Surveillance footage captured Brown leaving the building and going to a family member's home, where he left a bloody t-shirt and the murder weapon. DNA testing later linked both items to him and to the victim.
In November 2024, Karon Brown pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree murder while armed. Subsequently, in February 2025, he was sentenced to 21 years in prison for the murder of Cynthia Barringer. The case, built on the diligent work of the Metropolitan Police Department and the U.S. Attorney's Office, brought a measure of justice for the violent end to a young woman's life.
