On a Sunday afternoon, December 5, 2021, the sound of multiple gunshots pierced the air in the 1100 block of Eastern Avenue, NE in Washington, D.C. When police arrived at the scene around 1:57 p.m., they discovered 24-year-old Raychelle Free, a Black/African American female, inside a vehicle suffering from numerous gunshot wounds. Despite the immediate response from emergency medical services, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the homicide began swiftly, with
detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch taking the lead. The vehicle she was found in was riddled with bullet holes, indicating a violent and targeted attack. Authorities later revealed they were seeking three juveniles in connection with the fatal shooting. A neighbor recounted being startled from a nap by the gunfire, expressing his shock and sorrow over the brazen daylight killing.
In the wake of her death, those who knew Raychelle remembered her as a loving mother to two young sons. Her mother, in a quiet and dignified grief, spoke of the immense loss her family now faced with her daughter's two children left motherless.
As the investigation continues, no arrests have been made in the case. The Metropolitan Police Department has offered a reward of up to $25,000 for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for her death. The case remains an open and active homicide investigation, leaving a family and community awaiting justice for a life cut tragically short.
