In the early evening of June 12, 2022, gunshots shattered the peace in the 1300 block of Savannah Street, Southeast, in the Congress Heights neighborhood of Washington, D.C. When officers from the Metropolitan Police Department's Seventh District arrived at the scene around 6:01 p.m., they discovered two men suffering from gunshot wounds. One of the victims was 34-year-old Alphonzo Edward Jones, a Black male from Temple Hills, Maryland.
