In the early evening of June 12, 2022, gunshots shattered the peace in the 1300 block of Savannah Street, Southeast, in the Congress Heights neighborhood of Washington, D.C. When officers from the Metropolitan Police Department's Seventh District arrived at the scene around 6:01 p.m., they discovered two men suffering from gunshot wounds. One of the victims was 34-year-old Alphonzo Edward Jones, a Black male from Temple Hills, Maryland.

Fire and Emergency Medical Services personnel responded to the scene and pronounced Alphonzo Edward Jones dead. His body was subsequently transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine the official cause and manner of death. The second man who was shot in the incident was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries.
The Metropolitan Police Department is actively investigating the fatal shooting of Alphonzo Edward Jones as a homicide. As of now, no arrests have been made in the case, and the police have not released any information about potential suspects. A reward of up to $25,000 has been offered to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for his death. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to seek assistance from the public to bring closure to the case.
