In the early afternoon of June 8, 2023, 62-year-old Lasanta McGill was in the 1900 block of 7th Street, Northwest in Washington, D.C., when he became the unintended victim of a violent altercation. At approximately 1:07 pm, police responded to reports of a shooting in the area and discovered McGill suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency services transported him to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting revealed a tragic sequence of events that led to the death of an innocent bystander. Earlier that day, 20-year-old Demarcus Barnett had been the victim of a robbery by two individuals. In the aftermath, Barnett pursued the robbers and opened fire on them as they walked down the sidewalk. During this exchange, one of the bullets struck McGill.
The two individuals who had allegedly robbed Barnett returned fire, and in the crossfire, Barnett was also injured.
Following the incident, authorities swiftly identified Demarcus Barnett as the suspect in McGill's death. He was arrested on the same day and charged with second-degree murder while armed. Barnett initially pleaded not guilty. However, in late August 2023, he accepted a plea agreement from prosecutors. The charge of second-degree murder was reduced to voluntary manslaughter while armed, to which Barnett pleaded guilty. His sentencing was scheduled for October 27, 2023.
