On the night of Friday, September 1, 2023, a sense of normalcy was shattered in the 100 block of Farragut Street, Northwest, in Washington, D.C. It was there, at approximately 11:09 p.m., that 43-year-old Richard Ruffin III, a Black male resident of Silver Spring, Maryland, became the victim of a fatal shooting.
Metropolitan Police Department Fourth District officers responded to reports of the shooting and discovered Mr. Ruffin at the scene.
Despite the immediate response of DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services, their efforts were in vain, and he was pronounced dead at the location. His body was subsequently transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The case is being investigated as a homicide by the Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch.
In the wake of the incident, the Metropolitan Police Department has reached out to the public for assistance, seeking any information that might lead to the apprehension of the person or persons responsible for Mr. Ruffin's death. A reward of up to $25,000 has been offered for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in the case. Authorities have encouraged anyone with information to contact them directly or to submit tips anonymously through their text line. To date, there have been no public announcements regarding any arrests made or suspects identified in connection with the shooting. The investigation into the death of Richard Ruffin III remains ongoing.
