In the early morning hours of June 22, 2022, a sense of normalcy was shattered in the 2800 block of Alabama Avenue, SE, in Washington, D.C. It was there, at approximately 1:11 a.m., that 36-year-old Vernon Vedo Harrison, a Black male, was standing at a bus stop when his life was tragically cut short. He was shot and killed in what authorities believe was an attempted robbery. The Metropolitan Police Department responded to the scene to find Harrison suffering from gunshot wounds.
He was rushed to a local hospital, but tragically, he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the violent death of Vernon Harrison led detectives to identify two individuals in connection with the crime. In a significant development on December 30, 2022, police arrested Antione Tucker, who was 29 years old at the time. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder while armed. The investigation didn't stop there, as another individual, 29-year-old Nakia Pearson, was also implicated. Pearson faces charges of being an accessory after the fact, accused of driving Tucker away from the scene of the shooting and helping to dispose of the weapon used in the commission of the crime.
During a preliminary hearing on March 29, 2023, a D.C. Superior Court Judge found that there was probable cause to connect both Tucker and Pearson to the murder of Vernon Harrison. Prosecutors presented evidence suggesting that items belonging to Tucker were discovered in a search of Pearson's car. Despite a request for his release on GPS monitoring, the judge ordered that Tucker remain in custody due to the danger he posed to the community and his prior criminal history. Pearson, however, was released while awaiting further legal proceedings, with a felony arraignment for both individuals scheduled for a later date.
