In the summer of 2022, on the first of July, the life of 17-year-old Dennis Simms was tragically cut short in a brazen afternoon shooting in Southeast Washington, D.C. The young man was in the 800 block of Yuma Street when gunfire erupted from a passing vehicle. Emergency services who responded to the scene found Simms suffering from a gunshot wound.
He showed no signs of life and was pronounced dead at the location.
The investigation into the homicide led detectives to focus on social media, where they uncovered a dispute that had unfolded on Instagram. The evidence suggested the shooting was an act of revenge for a prior robbery, though family members of Simms stated that he was not the intended target of the violent act. This information, along with other evidence, pointed toward two brothers as the perpetrators.
In October of that same year, the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force apprehended 19-year-old Davon Alston of Oxon Hill, Maryland. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder while armed. Later, his 21-year-old brother, Juvan Alston, was also arrested and faced the same charge in connection with the death of Dennis Simms. Court proceedings revealed that a judge found probable cause to connect the two brothers to the drive-by shooting that resulted in the teenager's death. The case against the Alston brothers remains under investigation as the legal process continues.
