In the late afternoon of August 9, 2022, a tragic event unfolded on the 100 block of Irvington Street in Southwest Washington, D.C., that would claim the life of 20-year-old Brian Buxton. An off-duty Metropolitan Police Department officer was flagged down at approximately 4:52 pm regarding a shooting. The officer discovered Buxton, a male resident of Fort Washington, Maryland, suffering from a gunshot wound.
Emergency services promptly transported him to a local hospital to be treated for life-threatening injuries. Despite medical efforts, Brian Buxton succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead the following day, on August 10, 2022. The cause of death was determined to be a gunshot wound to the head, resulting in what a physician described as an 'unsurvivable brain injury'.
The investigation into the homicide led detectives to identify two suspects. On August 4, 2023, nearly a year after the fatal shooting, the Metropolitan Police Department's Fugitive Unit arrested 19-year-old Aaron Walker and 19-year-old Dasani Dawson. Both were charged with first-degree murder while armed in connection with Brian Buxton's death. The investigation suggested a possible link between the suspects and a carjacking that occurred on the same day as the shooting.
Following their arrests, the legal process against Aaron Walker and Dasani Dawson commenced. In a preliminary hearing on January 25, 2024, a DC Superior Court Judge found probable cause, allowing the case to proceed to trial. During the hearing, a detective presented surveillance video evidence that allegedly connected both Walker and Dawson to the carjacking incident. Further testimony revealed that several 9mm shell casings were recovered from the scene of the shooting, and that Dawson had allegedly searched online for 'how to take apart a Glock 19' after the incident. As the case moved through the court system, both Walker and Dawson faced additional charges, including robbery while armed and armed carjacking.
