On the evening of December 29, 2022, a burst of gunfire shattered the night in the 2700 block of 7th Street Northeast in Washington, D.C. When police arrived at approximately 7:14 p.m., they discovered 50-year-old Aniekobo Macaulay Umoh, a Black man from Brandywine, Maryland, suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency medical services rushed him to a nearby hospital, but his life could not be saved.
The investigation into the death of the male victim led authorities to two suspects.
In January 2023, police arrested 38-year-old Rafeal Stevens and 39-year-old Jermall Johnson, charging both with First Degree Murder while Armed. Initially, investigators believed a red SUV with four occupants was involved, though the focus later shifted to the two individuals who were apprehended.
During Rafeal Stevens' murder trial, conflicting narratives of the fatal encounter emerged. Prosecutors argued that Stevens had intentionally escalated a conversation with Umoh, left the scene to get a gun, and returned to confront him, suggesting the act was premeditated. They presented video evidence showing Umoh, who was unarmed, with his hands raised as Stevens approached. The defense, however, claimed the shooting was an accident that occurred as Stevens was waving the gun in self-defense after Umoh allegedly threatened him. The defense attorney stated that Stevens had approached Umoh, whom he believed to be a drug dealer, to ask him to stay away from his sister. The trial ultimately ended with a hung jury on two counts, resulting in a mistrial. In a later development, one of the defendants pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter.
