On June 3, 1999, a horrific series of events unfolded in Las Vegas, Nevada, culminating in the tragic death of Lucille Alice Tarantino, along with three other individuals, at an Albertson's supermarket.
The events began early in the morning when Zane Michael Floyd, a 23-year-old ex-Marine and nightclub bouncer, telephoned an 'outcall' service and requested a young woman to be sent to his apartment.
Around 3:30 a.m., a 20-year-old woman arrived at Floyd's apartment, where she was immediately threatened with a shotgun and forced to engage in various acts of sexual assault, including vaginal intercourse, anal intercourse, digital penetration, and fellatio. Floyd, who was wearing Marine Corps camouflage clothing, told the woman that he was going to kill the first people he saw and gave her 60 seconds to run or be killed. The woman managed to escape and ran from the apartment.
Following the sexual assault, Floyd took his shotgun and walked to the nearby Albertson's supermarket, located at Sahara Avenue and Valley View Boulevard, approximately a 15-minute walk from his apartment. At around 5:15 a.m., Floyd entered the store, where he began a rampage. The store's security videotape captured the horrific events as they unfolded. Floyd shot Thomas Michael Darnell in the back, killing him immediately. He then shot and killed Carlos Chuck Leos and Dennis Troy Sargeant. Zachary T. Emenegger attempted to flee but was chased by Floyd, who shot him twice. Despite Floyd's declaration that Emenegger was dead, the victim survived his injuries.
Floyd then proceeded to the rear of the store, where he encountered Lucille Alice Tarantino, a 60-year-old employee. He shot her in the head, resulting in her immediate death. This brutal act was part of a senseless and random killing spree that left four people dead and one critically injured.
As Floyd exited the store, he was met by officers from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department who were already on the scene. After a brief standoff, during which Floyd pointed the shotgun at his own head, he was persuaded by a police officer to put down the gun and was subsequently taken into custody. Upon his arrest, Floyd admitted to the officers that he had shot the people in the store.
Zane Michael Floyd was later tried and found guilty of four counts of first-degree murder with use of a deadly weapon, one count of attempted murder with use of a deadly weapon, one count of burglary while in possession of a firearm, one count of first-degree kidnapping with use of a deadly weapon, and four counts of sexual assault with use of a deadly weapon. The jury imposed a death sentence for each of the murders, citing aggravating circumstances that included the random and motiveless nature of the killings and the significant risk of death to multiple people. For the other offenses, Floyd received the maximum prison terms to be served consecutively, along with an order for restitution totaling more than $180,000.
Floyd's arrest and subsequent conviction brought a measure of justice to the victims and their families, though the trauma and impact of the event would be lasting. The case highlighted the brutality and randomness of the crimes committed by Zane Michael Floyd, and it remains one of the most horrific incidents in Las Vegas's history.
