On a crisp autumn morning in Sparks, Nevada, the school day at Sparks Middle School was just beginning on October 21, 2013, when the normal routine was shattered by gunfire. Michael Terrence Landsberry, a 45-year-old White male and a respected math teacher at the school, found himself in the midst of a terrifying event that would ultimately cost him his life.
A former Marine and a member of the Nevada Air National Guard, Landsberry's instinct to protect was deeply ingrained.
The chaos was initiated by a 12-year-old seventh-grade student, Jose Reyes. Shortly before the first bell, Reyes opened fire with a 9mm Ruger semiautomatic pistol on the school's basketball courts. He first shot and wounded a 12-year-old student in the shoulder. As panic erupted and students began to flee, Landsberry, who was supervising the area, moved toward the danger. He bravely approached Reyes, raising his hands in a calm and non-threatening manner, and attempted to reason with the young boy, urging him to put down the gun. His courageous intervention gave other students precious moments to escape to safety.
Despite Landsberry's pleas, the troubled seventh-grader refused to back down. After a brief and tense confrontation, Reyes shot the unarmed teacher in the chest, killing him. Following this, Reyes shot and wounded a second 12-year-old student who had tried to come to Landsberry's aid. Shortly after, as police arrived at the scene, Jose Reyes turned the gun on himself, ending his own life.
In the aftermath of the tragic shooting, no arrests were made in direct connection with the violence that unfolded at the school. The sole perpetrator was identified as Jose Reyes, who died by suicide at the scene. The investigation revealed that Reyes had taken the firearm from his home. His parents cooperated with the authorities, and the possibility of charges against them was considered in relation to how the boy accessed the weapon. The community mourned the loss of a heroic teacher who made the ultimate sacrifice in an effort to protect his students.
