On the evening of February 14, 2021, a Valentine's Day filled with simmering tension turned tragic for 25-year-old Vintell Lamontta Johnson, a Black / African American male, in Sparks, Nevada. An argument erupted in the parking lot of an apartment complex on El Rancho Drive, forever altering the lives of those involved. What began as a dispute between Johnson and his girlfriend escalated into a fatal act of violence, not at the hands of his partner, but her own sister.
At approximately
7:32 p.m., the sound of gunshots pierced the air, prompting several calls to the Sparks Police Department. When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Vintell Johnson suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite immediate life-saving efforts by the officers and subsequent transportation to Renown Medical Center, Johnson succumbed to his injuries. The investigation into his death quickly shifted from a grim discovery to a homicide investigation.
In the days that followed, the Sparks Police Department identified Katrina Carvalho, the sister of Johnson's girlfriend, as the primary suspect. Investigators determined that during the heated argument between Johnson and her sister, Carvalho produced a firearm and shot Johnson three times in the back. Following the shooting, Carvalho fled the state, prompting a manhunt that extended beyond Nevada's borders. Secret Witness offered a reward for information leading to her capture, as authorities believed she had escaped to California.
The search for Katrina Carvalho concluded in December 2021 when she was apprehended in Los Angeles County. Extradited back to Washoe County to face justice, the legal proceedings against her commenced. During the trial, the prosecution presented compelling evidence, including video footage and DNA, that linked Carvalho to the crime. Witnesses who observed the altercation and its deadly conclusion also provided testimony. Furthermore, prosecutors shared recorded jail calls in which Carvalho alluded to her role in the murder. After hearing the evidence, a jury found Katrina Carvalho guilty of first-degree murder with the use of a firearm. Consequently, she was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after serving a minimum of 20 years.
