In the early hours of May 20, 2014, a dispute in a Las Vegas apartment complex parking lot tragically cut short the life of 18-year-old Christopher Lamar Randle Jr., a Black male who had recently graduated high school. The incident occurred shortly after midnight at the Sonoma Hills apartments on East Tropicana Avenue. Christopher's father, Christopher Lamar Randle Sr., was walking home when he had an encounter with a group of men in the parking lot.
Believing they had mistaken him for someone else, he returned to his apartment and woke his son. The two went back outside to confront the group.
What began as a quarrel quickly escalated into deadly violence. An argument broke out between Randle Sr., who was armed, and another man, Seth Aulai. At this point, a third individual, Elekaua "Pola" Brown, who was 31 years old at the time, approached the scene. According to a witness, Brown pulled out a handgun and shot the unarmed and shirtless Christopher Jr., who was standing beside his father. In the ensuing chaos, Randle Sr. returned fire at Brown, but no one else was hit. After the shooting, Brown and Aulai fled the scene. Responding officers found Randle Sr. attempting to drag his wounded son toward their apartment. Christopher Jr. was rushed to Sunrise Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the shooting led police to Elekaua Brown, whom a detective had spoken to earlier in one of the apartments. Initially denying his involvement, Brown later confessed to the shooting during questioning. He claimed that he and his friends believed they were going to have a fistfight with the Randles. Brown stated that he only drew his 9mm pistol and fired after seeing Randle Sr. point a gun at his friend, Aulai. After the shooting, Brown admitted to ditching the pistol on the way to a fast-food restaurant with his friends.
Elekaua Brown was arrested and initially charged with first-degree murder with a deadly weapon. In a later court proceeding, he was sentenced to serve between 42 and 105 months in prison after pleading guilty to one count of voluntary manslaughter. During the sentencing, Christopher's grandmother spoke of her grandson's love for basketball and football and his aspiration to attend culinary school. In a poignant moment, she expressed her forgiveness towards Brown for his actions.
