On Sunday, June 8, 2014, Police Officer Alyn Ronnie Beck, aged 41, was tragically killed in the line of duty along with his colleague, Officer Igor Soldo, in a devastating ambush in Las Vegas, Nevada. The incident occurred while the two officers were eating lunch at a pizza restaurant located in the 300 block of North Nellis Boulevard.
The ambush was carried out by two subjects, a male and a female, who approached the officers at their table without warning.
The attackers shot both Officer Beck and Officer Soldo execution-style, taking their lives instantly. Following the shooting, the perpetrators stole the officers' weapons and ammunition before fleeing the scene.
The suspects then proceeded to a nearby Wal-Mart, where they continued their violent spree. Inside the Wal-Mart, they shot and killed a civilian, later identified as Joseph Wilcox, who was a Good Samaritan attempting to intervene. Responding officers quickly followed the suspects into the Wal-Mart, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
During this confrontation, the male suspect was killed by rifle fire from a responding officer. The female suspect, realizing the situation was hopeless, subsequently committed suicide. The swift and decisive action by the responding officers prevented further harm to innocent bystanders and brought the violent incident to an end.
The male suspect was later identified as Jerad Miller, and the female suspect was identified as Amanda Miller. The investigation revealed that the Millers were motivated by extremist ideologies and had a history of anti-government sentiments. The incident highlighted the dangers faced by law enforcement officers and the importance of vigilance and preparedness in responding to such threats.
Officer Alyn Ronnie Beck had served with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department for 14 years and was highly respected by his colleagues. He is survived by his wife and three children. In honor of both Officer Beck and Officer Soldo, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department established the Alyn Beck and Igor Soldo Memorial Scholarship Fund to commemorate their service and sacrifice.
