Ryan Wallace Osburn, 32, male, was found on June 23, 2014, when an inmate work crew came across human remains near Spooner Summit above Lake Tahoe in Douglas County, Nevada. More than a year later, DNA testing confirmed the identity as Osburn, a Reno man, bringing clarity to a discovery that had lingered without a name. Reports at the time noted the remote alpine setting off the highway near the summit, where the elements and terrain had kept the scene undisturbed until the crew's chance
encounter.
Investigators determined that Osburn died from a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Evidence recovered at the site—including a handgun, a bullet, and a spent casing—supported the conclusion that no one else was involved. With the medical and investigative findings pointing to suicide, authorities did not pursue suspects, and no arrests were made in connection with his death.
