In the late hours of February 12, 2015, a tragic and convoluted series of events began to unfold in a quiet Las Vegas neighborhood, culminating in the death of Tammy Meyers, a 44-year-old Caucasian woman and mother of four. The incident, initially portrayed as a case of road rage, was later unraveled by investigators as a fatal misunderstanding fueled by fear and mistaken identity.
Meyers was giving her 15-year-old daughter a driving lesson in a school parking lot when they had a frightening encounter with a male driver who reportedly threatened them. Shaken, Meyers drove her daughter home.
Instead of contacting the police, Meyers instructed her daughter to get her adult son, Brandon, who then armed himself with a handgun. Together, Tammy and Brandon Meyers went back out in her green Buick, searching for the individual who had threatened her and her daughter earlier. Their search led them to cross paths with a silver Audi driven by 26-year-old Derrick Andrews, with 19-year-old Erich Nowsch Jr. in the passenger seat. In a tragic turn of events, Meyers apparently mistook their vehicle for the one from the initial confrontation. Simultaneously, Nowsch, who was in a nearby park, became convinced that the green Buick was following him and that its occupants intended to harm him. He had called Andrews to pick him up.
A pursuit ensued, with shots being fired by Nowsch from the passenger seat of the Audi. The chase ended in the cul-de-sac outside the Meyers' home. As Tammy Meyers stood outside her car, a hail of gunfire erupted from the silver Audi. She was struck in the head. Brandon Meyers returned fire with his own weapon but did not hit anyone. Tammy Meyers was rushed to the hospital, where she died two days later, on February 14, 2015.
The investigation quickly led police to Erich Nowsch Jr., who was a neighbor of the Meyers family and someone Tammy had reportedly tried to help in the past. Nowsch was arrested, and so was the driver of the getaway car, Derrick Andrews. Both men faced multiple charges, including murder and attempted murder. In March 2016, both suspects pleaded guilty. Erich Nowsch Jr. pleaded guilty to second-degree murder with a deadly weapon, attempted murder, and discharging a firearm from a vehicle. He was later sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole. Derrick Andrews pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and accessory to murder and received a sentence of five to 15 years in prison.
