In the late morning of a September day in Las Vegas, a dispute over a ride to school tragically escalated, ending the life of 32-year-old Jamie Nichole Chase. On September 23, 2022, Jamie, a mother of five, drove to a home on Dennis Way in the southeast valley to confront a woman named Lahela Kaiwi-Brewer. Jamie had learned that Kaiwi-Brewer had given her children a ride to school, an arrangement she had previously forbidden as she did not trust the other woman.
The ensuing
confrontation, which began as a heated verbal argument, quickly turned fatal. As the disagreement intensified outside the residence, Kaiwi-Brewer went inside, retrieved a handgun, and returned to shoot Jamie in the head. Medical personnel pronounced Jamie dead at the scene from the single gunshot wound. Witnesses reported that the altercation had not become physical before the shooting occurred.
In the immediate aftermath, Lahela Kaiwi-Brewer, then 27 years old, was taken into custody by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. During questioning, she gave conflicting statements and claimed she could not recall the moment of the shooting, only that they had been fighting in the front yard. Investigators noted that neither Jamie nor the witness with her had been armed or had made any threats with a weapon. Kaiwi-Brewer was arrested and booked into the Clark County Detention Center on a charge of open murder.
Ultimately, Lahela Kaiwi-Brewer pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter with a deadly weapon in June 2023. At her sentencing in September of that year, she expressed remorse, stating that she never intended to shoot Jamie and that the gun went off during the confrontation. Her defense attorney argued the shooting was accidental. The judge sentenced Kaiwi-Brewer to a term of three to eight years in prison. Jamie's family, who described her as a mother who died protecting her children, expressed their wish for a longer sentence but were relieved she did not receive probation.
