She was a well-respected dog trainer and a familiar face in the competitive dog agility circles, where she and her prize-winning shelties were regular
participants. Her life, however, took a dark turn on October 15, 1997.
On that Wednesday evening, friends and fellow dog training instructors became concerned when Odell failed to show up to teach her class. Their concern led them to her home on East Shalimar Avenue around 7:30 p.m. where they made a horrifying discovery. Odell was found deceased in her garage, the victim of a brutal attack. An investigation determined she had died from multiple stab wounds, inflicted with a screwdriver that was found at the scene. It appeared she had just returned from the store, as groceries were left in her car and some had been carried inside.
Investigators pieced together a terrifying narrative of Odell's last moments. They believe she unknowingly walked in on a burglary in progress. There were no signs of forced entry, leading detectives to suspect the perpetrator or perpetrators were already inside her home when she arrived. Although valuable items were noted to be missing or disturbed, the lack of witnesses and forensic evidence, such as fingerprints or DNA, left the Las Vegas Metro Police with very few leads to follow.
In the years that have passed, Viola Odell's murder has become a cold case. Despite the passage of time, the shock and grief remain palpable among her friends in the close-knit dog community.
