On December 6, 2023, the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, became the scene of a tragedy that claimed the life of 39-year-old Patricia Navarro Velez. An assistant professor of accounting, she was in Beam Hall when a gunman opened fire, her life cut short by multiple gunshot wounds. A native of Puerto Rico, Navarro Velez was a dedicated educator and a mother of four, remembered by colleagues and students for her warm, larger-than-life personality and her passion for teaching.
She had joined the UNLV faculty in 2019, focusing her research on cybersecurity and data analytics, and was committed to educating the next generation of accountants.
The perpetrator was identified as 67-year-old Anthony Polito, a career professor who had unsuccessfully sought a job at the university. On that Wednesday morning, Polito entered the building armed with a handgun and began a rampage that would leave three faculty members dead and another injured. His motive appears to have been rooted in professional disappointment, as he had been rejected for positions at UNLV and other Nevada universities. The attack created a scene of terror and chaos as students and faculty scrambled for safety.
The violent episode concluded when Polito was confronted by UNLV police officers outside Beam Hall. In the ensuing shootout, the suspect was shot and killed by law enforcement, bringing an end to the immediate threat on campus. Because the lone suspect was deceased at the scene, no arrests were made in connection with the shooting. The incident left the university community grieving the loss of esteemed faculty members, including Patricia Navarro Velez, whose contributions to her field and her students were tragically silenced.
