On the evening of October 1, 2017, Dana Leann Gardner, a 52-year-old Caucasian woman from Grand Terrace, California, was attending the Route 91 Harvest music festival in Las Vegas with her daughter. What was meant to be a joyous occasion turned into a scene of unimaginable horror when a gunman opened fire on the crowd from a hotel room high above. Amid the chaos and terror, Gardner was struck by gunfire. Her daughter, who was unharmed, accompanied her in the ambulance to a trauma center.
Despite the immediate medical attention, Dana Gardner succumbed to her wounds.
A dedicated public servant, Gardner had worked for the San Bernardino County government for 26 years, where she was the deputy recorder-county clerk. Her boss, Bob Dutton, remembered her as a "go-to" person, someone who always had the answer and was known for her vibrant energy and "can-do" attitude. She was not only a committed professional but also a loving mother to three children and a grandmother to two.
The perpetrator of this senseless act of violence was identified as 64-year-old Stephen Paddock. He had meticulously planned the attack, firing more than 1,000 rounds from his 32nd-floor suite at the Mandalay Bay hotel into the crowd of approximately 22,000 concertgoers. The rampage resulted in the deaths of 60 people and left hundreds more injured, making it the deadliest mass shooting by a lone gunman in modern U.S. history.
After carrying out the attack, Paddock was found dead in his hotel room from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Law enforcement conducted an extensive investigation into his motives, but ultimately, no clear reason for his actions was ever determined. The FBI concluded that Paddock acted alone and did not have ties to any terrorist organizations or hate groups.
