Ashley Burrell was shot on the evening of December 1, 2023, when a gunman opened fire on a homeless encampment near Sandhill Road and Charleston Boulevard in northeast Las Vegas. Police said the shooter was dropped off by a black SUV near a freeway overpass, walked into the camp, and began firing before fleeing to a waiting vehicle. Five people were struck; Burrell and Timothy Brenton later died of their wounds, while three others were injured.
Responding officers transported the wounded to University Medical Center as the search for those responsible began. Investigators described the attack as targeted but did not publicly identify a motive.
Detectives soon focused on a trio of suspects. On January 5, 2024, police arrested 31-year-old Cristobal Omar Perez and his 21-year-old girlfriend, Kylee Au Young. Authorities alleged Perez was the gunman and that Au Young acted as a getaway driver; they also said a third suspect had not yet been identified. The names of the two people killed—Ashley Burrell and Timothy Brenton—were released as part of those announcements.
Court records show the case moved forward in 2025. In late February, Perez pleaded guilty in Clark County District Court to two counts of murder with a deadly weapon for the killings at the camp. On April 9, 2025, a judge sentenced him to two consecutive terms of 20 years to life, requiring a minimum of 40 years before he is eligible for parole. Prosecutors have said Au Young still faces charges including two counts of murder and conspiracy to commit murder; her case remained open at that time.
