On a warm evening in Las Vegas, a senseless act of violence cut short the life of Mohammed Robinson, a 31-year-old Black / African American man. On August 27, 2016, the father of four was on his lunch break from work shortly before midnight when he went to a McDonald's on Las Vegas Boulevard North. A trivial moment, a door closing before a woman could exit, quickly escalated into a fatal confrontation. The woman, angered by the perceived slight, complained to her male companion.
That man then sought out Robinson in the restaurant's parking lot, where an argument erupted, culminating in the man shooting Robinson multiple times.
Emergency services rushed Robinson to University Medical Center, but his injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced dead. The seemingly minor incident had tragically ended in homicide, leaving his family, including a three-month-old infant daughter, devastated. His loved ones described him as a hardworking and caring man who would typically walk away from conflict, making the sudden violence all the more shocking. The entire event was captured on surveillance footage, providing investigators with crucial evidence.
The investigation led North Las Vegas police to identify 25-year-old Alonso Perez as the suspected shooter. He was arrested on September 2, 2016, but the case took a dramatic turn just hours later. While left alone in an interrogation room, Perez managed to break his handcuffs, climb into the ceiling, and escape the police station. He then stole a work truck that had been left running nearby. His freedom was short-lived, however, as a four-day manhunt involving local and federal authorities led to his recapture on September 6.
Following his re-arrest, further investigation connected Perez to a string of violent crimes. Ballistics evidence linked the gun used to kill Robinson to two other homicides that occurred in August 2016: the shooting deaths of 50-year-old Jeffrey Johnson and 37-year-old Candelario Duran. Faced with overwhelming evidence, prosecutors, who had initially planned to seek the death penalty, reached a plea agreement with Perez. He pleaded guilty to the three murders and was subsequently sentenced to three consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole.
