An Air Force veteran, Jackson was embarking on a new chapter in her life, having recently passed her board exams to become a nurse practitioner.
She was the mother of a young daughter from a previous relationship and an 11-month-old son, John Dylan Lunetta, with her live-in boyfriend, 40-year-old John Henry Lunetta. Neighbors and friends described her as a devoted mother and a determined individual who had accomplished her dreams.
Behind the facade of their suburban life, however, there were signs of trouble. Friends and family reported that Jackson was planning to leave Lunetta, describing him as verbally abusive and controlling. A moving truck had been seen at their home, and police had been called to the residence for a custody dispute in the months leading up to the tragedy, though no violence had been reported at that time.
The grim discovery was made after relatives, unable to reach the family, went to the house to check on them. Inside, they found a scene of unimaginable horror. Investigators determined that John Henry Lunetta had shot and killed Karen Jackson, their infant son, and the family dog before turning the gun on himself in a murder-suicide. The Clark County coroner's office confirmed that Jackson died from multiple gunshot wounds and her death was ruled a homicide.
