On the evening of September 22, 2017, Lloyd Wayne Ullyott, a 68-year-old White male, was driving his blue truck through a gated community in the northwest valley of Las Vegas. He was on his way to visit and care for his 95-year-old mother-in-law, who lived just a block from the entrance of the neighborhood. As he drove slowly near the entrance on the 9200 block of Swamp Rose Avenue at approximately 7:15 p.m., another vehicle, driven by 62-year-old Jim Reed Davis, was behind him.
Davis, becoming impatient with Ullyott's speed, honked his horn.
What began as a simple expression of frustration quickly escalated into a fatal encounter. Ullyott pulled his truck over, and according to his wife, he got out and raised his arms, saying something to the effect of, "Do you have a problem?". As Ullyott approached the window of Davis's vehicle, Davis shot him. Tragically, Lloyd Ullyott died from the gunshot wound. His wife later recounted that he was not a confrontational man and had a bad hip that made walking difficult, suggesting he was not a physical threat. She also mentioned that a previous car accident where he was rear-ended had made him a very cautious driver, especially concerning tailgaters, and that he would often pull over to let other cars pass.
Following the shooting, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officers arrested Jim Reed Davis in connection with the death of Lloyd Ullyott. The investigation revealed that the incident was a case of road rage. It was also discovered that just nine months prior to the fatal shooting, Davis had completed court-ordered impulse control counseling stemming from a misdemeanor property destruction case. During a police interview after the shooting, Davis reportedly expressed regret, stating that in hindsight, driving around Ullyott or simply rolling up his window would have been better choices. At the time of the incident, Ullyott and his wife of 47 years had recently sold their Las Vegas home and were in the process of remodeling a house in Pahrump where they had planned to retire.
