Ethel Louise Atwell, a 42-year-old African American woman, vanished on the morning of October 24, 1978, in Staten Island, New York. She was arriving for work as a nurse aide at the Staten Island Developmental Center, located on the grounds of the former Willowbrook State School. It was still dark, around 6 a.m., when she pulled into the parking lot. Moments later, coworkers heard her scream. By the time authorities arrived, she was gone.
