In the pre-dawn hours of August 1, 2022, a gathering of friends in an east Las Vegas apartment complex courtyard took a fatal turn, ending the life of 26-year-old Timothy Johnson, a Black male. The group was near a basketball court at the complex on the 1700 block of Marion Drive when a fight broke out. In the ensuing chaos, gunshots rang out just after 4 a.m.
When police arrived at the scene, they found Johnson suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was rushed to University Medical Center, but he succumbed to a gunshot wound to the chest about an hour later. The Clark County coroner's office officially ruled his death a homicide. Initially, witnesses reported seeing two males running from the area after the shooting, and no immediate arrests were made.
The investigation soon pointed to 19-year-old Kywon Gueary. A warrant for his arrest was issued on August 8, and he was taken into custody. Witnesses told police that Gueary had approached Johnson, took his gun, and exclaimed, “The gun belongs to me, Neighborhood 55 Crips!”. Investigators also found an Instagram account believed to be Gueary's, which contained a photo of someone in front of a Dodge Charger, similar to the vehicle witnesses said the shooter drove, and a chilling profile message: “I kill my own homies.” Gueary, who was already on probation for two previous robbery convictions, was charged with murder with a deadly weapon and discharging a gun into an occupied structure.
