Alan Lynn Bondelid, a 70-year-old Caucasian male, was fatally shot on the evening of December 27, 2020, in the driveway of his Las Vegas, Nevada, home. The incident occurred after an altercation at a local bar, Stadium Saloon and Laundry, on Boulder Highway. Bondelid had a brief argument with a couple at the bar before he decided to leave. Unbeknownst to him, the couple followed him as he drove to his residence on Bennett Drive.
Upon arriving at his home around 6:33 p.m., and as he was
getting out of his vehicle, Bondelid was confronted by the male suspect who had followed him. The assailant, later identified as 36-year-old Otis Buchanan, demanded Bondelid's wallet three times. Surveillance footage from Bondelid's home captured him recognizing his attacker, beginning to say, "Oh you're the… guy from the…" before he was shot once in the abdomen. After shooting him, Buchanan repeated his demand for the wallet and then punched Bondelid before fleeing the scene with his girlfriend, 31-year-old Dalana Smedley, in a dark purple Scion xB.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police were dispatched to the scene and found Bondelid lying in his driveway. He was transported to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries at 7:10 p.m. Investigators recovered a 9 mm cartridge case at the scene.
Hours after the shooting, in the early morning of December 28, police located the suspect vehicle in the parking lot of the same bar where the initial confrontation occurred. A traffic stop was conducted, and four individuals, including Buchanan and Smedley, were inside. Buchanan and Smedley were taken into custody and subsequently charged with open murder with a deadly weapon, robbery with a deadly weapon, and conspiracy to commit robbery with a deadly weapon. Initially, both denied any involvement in the incident. Otis Buchanan was later convicted by a jury of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole. Smedley maintained that she was unaware that Buchanan had shot the victim. The robbery netted the suspects a total of $8.
