John Joseph Phippen, a 56-year-old White male, was enjoying the Route 91 Harvest music festival in Las Vegas on the night of October 1, 2017, alongside his son, Travis. They were dancing together when the sound of gunfire suddenly pierced the festive atmosphere. In the ensuing chaos, Phippen's immediate instinct was to protect others. He heroically shielded a young woman with his own body from the hail of bullets.
Tragically, while shielding the woman, Phippen was struck in the back by a
bullet. His son Travis, a trained medic, immediately rushed to his father's aid. Despite his own injuries, Travis worked tirelessly to help other victims, applying makeshift tourniquets to the wounded. He found his father grievously wounded and attempted to carry him to safety, even trying to plug the bullet hole with his finger, but John's injuries were too severe. He was transported to a hospital where he later succumbed to his wounds.
The gunman responsible for the massacre was identified as Stephen Paddock, a 64-year-old man from Mesquite, Nevada. He had fired upon the concertgoers from a suite on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel. By the time law enforcement breached his room, Paddock had taken his own life. The Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted an extensive investigation into the shooting, which remains the deadliest in modern U.S. history. However, the investigation was officially closed in August 2018 without determining a clear motive for Paddock's horrific actions. No other suspects were identified, and no arrests were made in connection with the shooting itself.
