On a tragic day in Las Vegas, January 6, 2018, Weldeyoanes Zelealem’s life was cut short by an act of gun violence. She was at her job as a cashier at the Herbst Market, located in a gas station in the suburb of Henderson, when the unthinkable happened. Her estranged husband, Abebe Y. Teferi, entered the market and opened fire, ending her life at the scene. Two other individuals were also critically injured in the attack.

The investigation swiftly identified the 57-year-old Teferi as the sole suspect. The evidence pointed to a premeditated act, believed to be motivated by their estranged marital relationship. Surveillance footage from the convenience store captured the horrific event, showing Teferi walking up to the counter, firing several shots at Zelealem, and then turning the gun on himself.

Law enforcement apprehended Teferi following the shooting. He survived his self-inflicted gunshot wound and was taken into custody. While in the hospital, he was booked in absentia at the Clark County Detention Center, facing a murder charge for the death of his wife.
