On a tragic summer day in Las Vegas, Nevada, the life of 12-year-old Hispanic female, Sofia Molina, was cut short. On July 17, 2022, Sofia, who was about to enter the seventh grade at Somerset Academy Lone Mountain, was fatally shot by her own father, Israel Molina. The devastating event unfolded in the early morning hours when Israel Molina, a 42-year-old off-duty North Las Vegas police officer, was involved in an altercation with his wife.
The dispute escalated to violence when Israel
Molina attempted to shoot his wife. Their teenage son intervened, and during the struggle, both he and his mother were able to escape the residence with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds and call for help. Following their escape, Israel Molina shot and killed his daughter, Sofia, before taking his own life. When Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's SWAT team made an emergency entry into the home, they found the bodies of Sofia and her father.
In the wake of the murder-suicide, the community was left in shock and mourning. As Israel Molina was identified as the perpetrator and had died by suicide, there were no other suspects and no arrests were made in connection with Sofia’s death. A candlelight vigil was held at Somerset Academy Lone Mountain to honor Sofia's memory, where friends, faculty, and students gathered with flowers, balloons, and farewell notes to pay their respects. The school also made counselors available to support students and staff through the difficult time. The North Las Vegas Police Officers Association organized a fundraiser to assist Sofia's mother, Judith Molina, with medical expenses and funeral costs for her daughter.
