On the evening of February 11, 2020, a tragic event unfolded in a south Reno, Nevada cul-de-sac that cut short the life of 29-year-old Jarrod Scott Faust. The White / Caucasian male was fatally shot while sitting unarmed in his gold Chevrolet pick-up truck. The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed that the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head, ruling it a homicide.
Investigators sought information from the public, asking for anyone who might have witnessed activity in the area of Welcome Way and Rock Haven Drive between 8:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. to come forward.
The investigation into Faust's death soon focused on Wayne Cameron. The incident began after Cameron followed Faust's truck through residential streets. Cameron later claimed he was concerned about the manner in which the truck was being driven, stating it had nearly struck a motorcyclist. This pursuit culminated in a confrontation in a cul-de-sac, where Cameron fired the fatal shot into Faust's vehicle.
Wayne Cameron was subsequently arrested and charged with the murder of Jarrod Faust. During his trial, Cameron asserted that he acted in self-defense, testifying that he feared for his life during the confrontation. His defense attorney argued that Cameron believed a vape pen in Faust's hand could have been a weapon. However, the prosecution presented a case of road-rage leading to a senseless killing. In July 2021, a jury found Wayne Cameron guilty of first-degree murder after a two-week trial.
The legal battle did not end there. In October 2022, the Nevada Supreme Court overturned Cameron's murder conviction. The reversal was based on a legal technicality regarding the prosecutor's argument that the bullet entering the truck constituted a burglary, which was used to secure the first-degree murder conviction. The case was sent back to the district court. However, in a subsequent turn of events, the Nevada Supreme Court revisited the case and in April 2024, reinstated Wayne Cameron's murder conviction for the death of Jarrod Faust.
