On April 19, 2021, the life of Amy Kristine Mack, a 40-year-old Caucasian woman, was tragically cut short in her Las Vegas, Nevada home. Friends discovered her body after not hearing from her for a few days, prompting a call to the police around 11:30 a.m. Responding officers arrived at her residence on the 2400 block of East Wigwam Avenue, where they found Mack deceased from multiple gunshot wounds.
The Clark County coroner's office later ruled her death a homicide, citing gunshot wounds to the neck and left upper extremity, along with brain and leg injuries.
The investigation into her violent death quickly focused on her 30-year-old boyfriend, John Ellis. Detectives learned from Mack's family and neighbors that Ellis had been living with her, but their relationship had soured, and she had recently told family that she was going to ask him to move out. A neighbor reported seeing Mack return home on the morning of April 18th and later saw Ellis leave in her car, which he was not typically allowed to drive, carrying a black bag. Investigators found paperwork for a Glock 9mm handgun registered to Ellis inside the residence, along with six shell casings near the bedroom.
Following the discovery of Mack's body, her vehicle was missing, and authorities determined that Ellis had fled the state. Cell phone records indicated he traveled to San Antonio, Texas, immediately after the killing. An arrest warrant was issued for John Ellis on a charge of open murder. He was also charged with battery and taking a vehicle without the owner's consent. Ellis was subsequently apprehended and taken into custody, held without bail at the Clark County Detention Center.
