Ashley Marilyn Green, a 26-year-old Black woman, was tragically killed on October 30, 2021, in Las Vegas, Nevada. The incident that led to her death began to unfold at the Solaire Apartments located at 1750 E. Karen Avenue. A dispute concerning COVID-19 loan funds was the catalyst for the violence that ensued.
On the day of the shooting, Green was providing a ride to a friend, Lorenzo Chappell, who was a resident of the Solaire Apartments.
Chappell had forgotten his money on the way to a convenience store, and Green was driving him back to his apartment. This seemingly mundane errand took a fatal turn due to an ongoing conflict between Chappell and a man named Kaveon Phillips. Earlier in June 2021, Phillips had reportedly shot at Chappell on multiple occasions.
As Green drove Chappell back to his apartment, they were followed by a vehicle carrying Phillips and another man, Dravion Griley. Surveillance footage captured the moment when nine shots were fired into Green's Nissan. Green was struck in the head and back, and she lost consciousness. A Metropolitan Police Department officer who arrived at the scene found that she had no pulse.
The investigation into Ashley Green's murder led to the identification of Kaveon Phillips, 19 at the time, and Dravion Griley, then 23, as the primary suspects. Griley was apprehended in Arizona in November 2021, and an FBI task force arrested Phillips in Indiana a month later. Both men faced a multitude of charges, including murder, conspiracy, assault with a deadly weapon, attempted murder, and discharging a firearm into an occupied structure.
Ultimately, Kaveon Phillips and Dravion Griley-Burnside pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and attempted murder. In exchange for their guilty pleas and cooperation, prosecutors dropped 50 of the original 52 charges. The remorse expressed by both men during the trial was also a factor in their sentencing. In the aftermath of this tragedy, the estate of Ashley Green filed a lawsuit against the owners and managers of the Solaire Apartments, alleging that their negligence and failure to provide adequate security contributed to her death.
