In the days leading up to his death, 31-year-old Christopher Pineda, a male, had been involved in altercations with another man. The conflict escalated two days before the fatal encounter when a man was captured on video driving up to the Rainbow Market on East Lake Mead Boulevard in a pickup truck and physically assaulting Pineda behind the store. This same man would soon be accused of ending Pineda’s life.
On the evening of May 7, 2022, a strange scene unfolded inside the market.
Pineda and the man who had attacked him days earlier, 23-year-old Jesus Osuna-Lopez, were seen together, seemingly calmly playing slot machines. At one point, the two men stepped out into the parking lot for a conversation before re-entering the market and returning to the games. Their time together, however, was brief. Osuna-Lopez was the first to leave the establishment, but he didn’t go far.
Instead of leaving the area, Osuna-Lopez waited in the parking lot. When Pineda eventually exited the market, he was confronted by Osuna-Lopez. In a final, desperate moment, Pineda raised his hands in the air. The gesture was in vain. Osuna-Lopez allegedly fired his weapon, striking Pineda. First responders were called to the gas station parking lot around 8:30 p.m. and found Pineda suffering from gunshot wounds. He was rushed to University Medical Center but was pronounced dead. The coroner later determined the cause of death to be a gunshot wound to the hip and a cardiovascular injury, ruling it a homicide. The shooter had fled the scene on foot.
Detectives used surveillance footage from inside the store and compared it with prior mugshots to identify Jesus Osuna-Lopez as the suspect. It was discovered that Osuna-Lopez had a history of arrests in the previous three years for charges that included impaired driving, battery, and burglary. A warrant for his arrest on the charge of murder was issued four days after the shooting. The search for Osuna-Lopez ended in Phoenix, Arizona, where he was apprehended. He was then awaited extradition back to Las Vegas to face the murder charge for his alleged role in the death of Christopher Pineda.
