In the spring of 2022, a young, White/Caucasian man named Dylan Rounds, 19 years of age, vanished from his farm in the remote desert town of Lucin, Utah. He was last heard from on May 28, 2022, after a phone call with his grandmother. An extensive search ensued, but for nearly two years, his whereabouts remained a mystery, leaving his family and investigators grasping for answers.
The last signal from his phone was traced to a pond near the trailer of a man named James Brenner, who was squatting on property near Rounds's farm.
The investigation soon zeroed in on James Brenner, a man with a violent criminal history. He was initially arrested on federal firearms violations in June 2022. Investigators discovered a pair of Rounds's boots near a dirt mound, one of which had a bloodstain that was later confirmed to be Dylan's DNA. A critical piece of evidence emerged from Rounds's recovered cell phone, which was found at the bottom of the pond his last signal pinged from. A time-lapse video on the phone showed Brenner with what appeared to be blood stains on his shirt and arm while cleaning a gun. The DNA on the shirt was later matched to Dylan Rounds. This video became a pivotal element in the case against Brenner.
In March 2023, James Brenner was charged with aggravated murder and abuse or desecration of a human body. For months, he maintained his innocence, and the search for Dylan's body continued. A breakthrough in the case came in April 2024 when, as part of a plea agreement, Brenner led authorities to a remote burial site in Box Elder County. It was there that the skeletal remains of Dylan Rounds were recovered.
As part of the plea deal, the charge of first-degree aggravated murder was reduced to second-degree murder. In court, it was revealed that the motive for the killing was a dispute over where Rounds had parked his truck. James Brenner pleaded guilty to the murder of Dylan Rounds and was sentenced to a minimum of three years and a maximum of 30 years in prison. The judge recommended that the parole board keep him incarcerated for as long as legally possible.
