In the early hours of July 17, 2014, the sense of security in a gated community in Las Vegas was shattered by violence that claimed the life of 22-year-old Marvin Surrell, an African-American male. Residents reported hearing a loud banging on a neighbor's door around 12:30 a.m., a disturbance that was soon followed by the unmistakable sound of gunshots.
