In the early hours of July 17, 2014, the sense of security in a gated community in Las Vegas was shattered by violence that claimed the life of 22-year-old Marvin Surrell, an African-American male. Residents reported hearing a loud banging on a neighbor's door around 12:30 a.m., a disturbance that was soon followed by the unmistakable sound of gunshots.
When police arrived at the scene near Blue Diamond Road and Durango Drive, they discovered a grim scene inside the home.
Marvin Surrell was found on an upper floor of the residence, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of first responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident was investigated by Metro Police as an apparent home invasion. In the aftermath of the shooting, it was discovered that Surrell's car had been stolen, adding another layer to the violent encounter.
In the years following Surrell's death, his case has remained unsolved, and no arrests have been made. The investigation has not publicly identified any suspects in his murder. Information released by authorities indicated that in addition to Surrell's stolen vehicle, a second car, described as a dark-colored sedan, was seen leaving the area around the time of the homicide. The lack of resolution has left a lingering sense of injustice for a young life cut tragically short. His death was recorded as the 69th homicide in Metro Police's jurisdiction for that year.
