In the summer of 2022, the life of 19-year-old Samiir Smith, a Black / African American male, was tragically cut short in Las Vegas, Nevada. On the evening of July 29th, just before 10:15 p.m., a violent encounter unfolded inside an apartment on the 1900 block of Cindysue Street. What began as a knock at the door quickly escalated into a fatal altercation.
Two men arrived at the residence, and an argument broke out between them and the occupants.
The verbal dispute soon turned physical, and in the ensuing struggle, one of the visitors produced a firearm. Shots were fired, striking both Samiir Smith and another individual, 24-year-old Deanna Marie Diaz. Smith suffered a gunshot wound to the chest, while Diaz was shot in the back. The two assailants fled the scene before law enforcement could arrive.
Emergency services responded to the chaotic scene, but the injuries sustained by both victims were too severe. The Clark County coroner's office would later confirm that both Samiir Smith and Deanna Marie Diaz died from their gunshot wounds, ruling both deaths as homicides. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department immediately launched an investigation into the double homicide, searching for the men responsible for the senseless act of violence.
For months, the case remained under active investigation. Then, in the spring of 2023, a significant breakthrough occurred. On April 8, 2023, police arrested 18-year-old Emerson Hewitt in connection with the murders. Just days later, on April 12, a series of arrests followed, bringing four more suspects into custody. These individuals were identified as 18-year-old Damion Mixon, 18-year-old Larry Young, 20-year-old Mark Burton, and 20-year-old Nasir Leggroan. The apprehension of these five suspects marked a major turning point in the investigation into the deaths of Samiir Smith and Deanna Marie Diaz.
