In the late hours of a warm Saturday night in Las Vegas, on August 29, 2020, the life of 24-year-old Anthony Lee Mitchell was tragically cut short. He and three other individuals were walking through an alleyway on the 700 block of East Twain Avenue, near University Center Drive, with the intention of going to a nearby convenience store. It was there, at approximately 11:23 p.m., that they were confronted by three males.
During the encounter, one of the three approaching men suddenly
opened fire on the group. The eruption of gunfire left all four individuals in the alleyway with gunshot wounds. When officers from the Metropolitan Police Department arrived at the scene, they found a chaotic and grim situation. Anthony Mitchell was pronounced dead at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds. The three other victims were quickly transported to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center for their injuries.
The violence of that night also claimed the life of 46-year-old Phillip Zuniga, who succumbed to a gunshot wound to the torso at the hospital. Their deaths were both ruled as homicides by the Clark County coroner's office. In the days that followed the shooting, the suspects fled the scene, leaving the motive behind the attack undetermined. However, the Las Vegas police investigation led to the arrests of two men, 27-year-old Bobby Torres and 20-year-old Ivan Herrera, in connection with the double homicide. It was not immediately clear if a third suspect had been identified.
