On May 26, 1981, 57-year-old J.C. Tyus Sr. was fatally shot during an attempted robbery at his family-operated grocery store, Mr. GEM Market, located at 2958 Downing Street in Denver, Colorado. Originally from Alabama, Tyus had moved to Denver at the age of 12 and dedicated over four decades to the grocery business. He was a married father of six children.
