A dispute that began in the parking lot of Sierra High School between two other students escalated with deadly consequences, forever altering the lives of several families.
The incident was rooted in a confrontation between Moses Cooley, a member of the Crips gang, and another student, Matt Tuiletufuga.
Following an argument, Cooley threatened Tuiletufuga, creating a palpable sense of fear. Alarmed, Matt contacted his older brother, Gene Tuiletufuga, for help. Gene, acting on the information provided by his younger brother, drove to the vicinity of the school.
Gene Tuiletufuga located the car described by his brother, which was being driven by Moses Cooley. In an act of retaliation for the threats made against his sibling, Gene opened fire on the vehicle. Tragically, a passenger in the car, James Leonard 'JL' Jackson, who was a friend of Cooley's, was struck by the gunfire. He sustained fatal injuries in the attack.
