Jose Luis Miranda Reza, a 28-year-old Hispanic/Latino man, was shot and killed during the early morning hours of October 8, 2024, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Shortly after 3:30 a.m., Colorado Springs police received a report of gunfire along Durango Drive, near Delta Drive and Hancock Expressway. Officers responding to the area found Miranda Reza suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and the death was investigated as a homicide.
The El Paso County Coroner’s Office later formally identified him.
Investigators eventually developed information pointing to Luis Daniel Perez as the suspected gunman. According to details contained in an arrest affidavit, the shooting occurred at an automobile shop in the 2600 block of Durango Drive where Perez worked. Witnesses told investigators that Perez and Miranda Reza had a preexisting disagreement involving vehicle parts and a motorcycle, although witnesses reportedly did not know all of the circumstances behind the dispute.
On the morning of the killing, a witness reported seeing Perez and Miranda Reza arguing inside or around the business. The verbal confrontation escalated when Perez allegedly began punching Miranda Reza. According to the witness account described in the affidavit, the physical fight eventually stopped, but Perez then produced a handgun. Miranda Reza was reportedly backing away when Perez fired a single shot at him. The witness described Perez as the person who had primarily escalated the confrontation from an argument into physical violence. After the shooting, Perez allegedly made a statement indicating that he had not wanted the situation to end that way before leaving the scene.
Another witness who had been around Perez before the homicide told investigators that Perez had been displaying and talking about his handgun earlier that day. That witness reportedly saw Perez with the firearm approximately an hour before Miranda Reza was killed. The statements from the witnesses, along with evidence gathered during the investigation, led authorities to seek Perez’s arrest.
An arrest warrant for Perez was filed on October 12, 2024, four days after the killing. Court records reported at the time indicated that a $1 million bond was to be imposed if he was taken into custody. Despite the warrant, Perez remained at large, and authorities continued listing him as a wanted fugitive.
The search has continued long after the homicide. As recently as September 28, 2026, Pikes Peak-area authorities were still publicly listing Luis Daniel Perez, then 40, as wanted on suspicion of first-degree murder as well as owning or operating a chop shop. His continued appearance on the region's most-wanted listings indicates that no arrest had been publicly reported by that date. Because Perez has remained a fugitive, there has been no reported trial or conviction in Miranda Reza's killing. The accusations against Perez therefore remain allegations unless and until they are proven in court.
