A night of celebration turned into a tragedy in west Phoenix on April 5, 2014, when 25-year-old Marcus Hernandez, a Hispanic male, was fatally shot. The evening was marked by two neighboring house parties in the 5400 block of West Palm Lane. At some point, an altercation erupted between attendees of the two separate gatherings, escalating a festive atmosphere into one of violence and chaos.
In the midst of the dispute, an unidentified individual produced a handgun and fired multiple shots. Hernandez was struck by the gunfire. In a desperate attempt to get help, he managed to get into a vehicle and drive away from the scene. His flight for life was cut short when he was involved in a car accident near 54th Avenue and Cypress Street. Despite the crash, authorities later determined that the gunshot wound was the cause of his death.
The shooting resulted in three other individuals being injured. Two of the wounded also left the scene in a vehicle, taking themselves to a nearby hospital for treatment of their injuries. The third victim remained at the location of the shooting.
In the immediate aftermath, Phoenix homicide detectives launched an investigation into the deadly shooting. However, law enforcement officials were unable to obtain a description of the shooter. In the years that have followed the incident, no arrests have been publicly announced, and the identity of the person or persons responsible for Marcus Hernandez's death remains unknown. The case has lingered, leaving a resolution unfound for the violent end to a young life.
