In January 2020, the life of 38-year-old Karen Morales was tragically cut short in what police have described as a domestic violence-related homicide. Found deceased in her south Denver home, the circumstances of her death soon led to the arrest of her boyfriend, Thomas Garcia. He was taken into custody on suspicion of first-degree murder, leaving family and friends to grapple with the sudden and violent loss of a woman they remember as beautiful, energetic, and incredibly caring.
The
family recalled that the relationship between Morales and Garcia was relatively new, but in retrospect, they acknowledged there were concerning signs. Garcia was reportedly controlling, often needing to know her whereabouts and preventing her from speaking to her family alone. These red flags, however, did not prepare them for the devastating outcome. Her niece, Michaela Morales, shared fond memories of her aunt's humor and laughter, contrasting the joy she brought to their lives with the immense pain of her loss.
In the wake of her death, the Morales family hopes that by sharing Karen's story, they might help prevent similar tragedies from affecting other families. They emphasized the importance of speaking out and seeking help if someone is in a difficult or potentially dangerous situation. A GoFundMe campaign was established to assist with the financial burden of her funeral expenses. The Denver Office of the Medical Examiner formally identified Karen Morales as the victim, bringing a somber confirmation to a heartbroken family and community.
