On the evening of July 24th, Tafoya had gone to the home of a woman considered to be her friend, Lisa Garcia, located in the 4700 block of North Vine Street. The plan was for Tafoya's mother, Karen, to pick her up from Garcia's residence to attend a baby shower together.
However, what should have been a joyful occasion took a horrifying turn.
When Tafoya's mother and eldest son, Johnnie, arrived at the house, they were met by a visibly shaken Lisa Garcia. Garcia claimed that Neomi had already left, a statement that would soon be proven to be a devastating lie. In reality, Tafoya was just beyond the door, clinging to life after being shot in the head. After gaining entry to the home, family members found the critically injured Tafoya. The motive for the tragic act remains unclear, with speculation from Tafoya's family pointing towards a possible disagreement over $300 or jealousy concerning a man. The grim saga concluded on September 3, 2021, at the Ivy Crossing apartment complex near South Quebec Street and East Harvard Avenue. Members of a task force had located Garcia, and a confrontation ensued. According to reports from the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office, Garcia emerged from an apartment and aimed a handgun at the deputies. Although she did not fire her weapon, the deputies responded with gunfire, resulting in Garcia's death from multiple gunshot wounds. Tafoya's family believes that Garcia, aware that she was under surveillance and that her capture was imminent, may have intentionally provoked the officers in an act of 'suicide by cop.'
